Im 5'10" - 180 lbs and need to lose about 45 lbs of baby weight! I signed up for a gym today and am wondering if i should drink protein shakes? Will this help or make me fatter? Are they only for slim people trying to build muscle?

Thanks!

It depends on what goal you want to achive. If your primary focus is gaining muscle first the protien shakes will be good, but if your primary focus is toning up and losing fat they will probably do more harm than good to have on a regular basis.

These shakes are normally pretty high calorie and lots of simple carbs so if your trying to lose weight they will probably hinder your process. If you want to use them ocasionally the best time to use them is after a good weight session or when you otherwise can't eat healthy.

To tone up just try adding some protien every meal (5-6 mini meals a day) the morning is especially important for this to stave off cravings later on.

LuckySmile is right.
Proteins are good if you want to tone up your muscles. Proteins will feed your muscles.
Some people use proteins to increase their strength and endurance even in a diet. If you just want to loose weight you do not need them. However if you decide to take proteins make sure you use low carb proteins.
