Usually people are starting doing cardio when they want to loose weight. Cardio (running, jogging, everything that raise the pulse) is good but its recommended for people that have no heart conditions.
I would use cardio exercises combined with strength training.
"NOT wanting to gain LOTS of muscle though" do not worry you will not. Increasing the muscular mass will also help you loose weight. The muscle tissue is consuming much more calories then the fat tissue. |

| Hi, Holly. I'm in the same boat but here's what I'm *trying* to do. I'm approaching this as a lifestyle change. It's not a one-time shot. Exercise is something you have to incorporate into your life. Weight loss is (almost) secondary. If you're making the decision to exercise and you do it daily (even if it's only 15 minutes a day), you'll feel results. |

Women are not prone to big muscle mass unless taking steroids or some equivalent. Pilates has been great for me. Interval training such as walking at normal pace, followed by few minutes of brisk pace. If you're just getting started, and are out of shape, nothing can top Richard Simmons. He's very motivational. Even if you can only do 10 min at a time a few times a day. Just doing something will give you more energy to keep going. I was originally 190#. I had lost 70#. Some things happened that I couldn't exercise, and gained some back. Stay motivated and stay moving! |

i agree completely, i find pilates to be relaxing but have really noticable results! its a good place to start. i have been trying to get my mom to try them since i started. she gets bad headaches and has back problems, and i don't have those problems when i do pilates everyday. and truely 10 min. a day is all you need. I have a crunch fitness "pick your spot pilates" video that i really like.
just my thoughts!
