Too much exercise and no weight loss |
|
|
For about 6 months now I've been training with a "bootcamp" group and been working out A LOT! I always take one day a week off, but the other days I'm running serveral miles, in intense cadio/kick/step classes, or my bootcamp. I can't seem to loose any weight though. I know it may be due to muscle weight that I'm gaining and some poor eating, but I've gained a clothing size or two. I feel like I'm in a nasty cycle right now as I'm trying to slim down, but I don't know if I can because I have so much muscle, and I'm scared to lessen my working out. Am I working out too much that my body is trying to store every once of fat and it's not burning anything? I would love to try and just do 3 or 4 days, but I'm afraid I'll gain weight too. If this makes sense to anyone, please let me know.

| Is it possible that your gaining muscle? Muscle weighs more than fat. |

Whatever it is you're doing, it isn't working...so I would recommend changing it up. Keep in mind that weight loss is not just about calorie burn. You also have to consider the hormonal effects of the type of exercise you are performing.
For instance, long duration cardio pretty much loses its effect after about 6 weeks of it because your hormonal response to it changes. After that point, I would recommend moving on to high intensity interval training which usually only takes 20-30 minutes to complete.
Food for thought...ever notice the difference in physique between sprinters and marathon runners? While some of this difference is due to genetic differences (athletes tend to gravitate towards the sport(s) in which their gifted), a good bit of it has to do with the type of training they do.
One last point, don't confuse high intensity with "super fatigued heart pumping workout." There is an inverse relationship between intensity and duration. Take a 10 mile run for example. Your heart may be racing, you may be tired, BUT...the fact that you're moving at a near steady state for 10 miles (70-90 minutes or more), by default the intensity level has to be low.
My advice: Ease up on the volume, increase the intensity, and straighten out the diet because the exercise will only benefit your weight loss progress if the diet will allow it. |

Sounds like it might be related more to nutrition than exercise.
Probably the best diet I've ever come across with no calorie counting, easy meals and fast results is the Dax Moy elimination diet at daxmoy-pts.co.uk/elimination.asp It's the same diet used by pop idol winner michelle mc manus to lose over 140 lbs in one year!
The cook book that goes with it is at sjmclk1.elimdiet.hop.clickbank.net/ and is absolutely fantastic with well over 100 recipes that you can cook in minutes!
go take a look!

Are you only doing cardio and not weights? That could be part of the problem. You need the weights to increase muscle mass. Just cardio can stress out your body and burn muscle rather than fat so you bulk up on fat.
Are you eating more because you are working out so much? Try going with 6 or 8 small meals a day. Sometimes just that can do the trick - it helps keep your metabolism going. |

The thing that stand out to me in your post is the comment that you made about your diet. Believe me, I understand that a healthy/balanced diet is such a hard thing---but it is essential to weight loss. Did you know that around 60% of our results (with weight loss) is due to our diet? That means you have the power to control your weight by choosing good, healthy foods. And I mean that, you have the power---every time you make a choice to eat something healthy you are stepping towards your goal! That is powerful!
Lastly, consider doing a food journal. Writing down everything you eat is a great way to monitor your diet.
