I had tryed Atkins and it worked for me. The New England Journal of Medicine, found that people on the high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate Atkins diet lose twice as much weight over six months as those on the standard low-fat diet recommended by most major health organizations.

Hi Light and Guest

I stayed on Atkins for a month and was very very happy with the results. I lost over 8 pounds and I was never hungry.

I will give you the basics:

You have basically three phases:[br]

Induction, Ongoing Weightloss, Maintenance

In Induction phase, you can only eat the following: In other words, if you want to go by the book you will ONLY eat the following:

Any type of meat, fish, fowl, seafood, eggs as well as not more than 3oz's per day of cheddar, cow, sheep, cream cheese, gouda, mozzarella, and some others I can't remember

You are also allowed 2 cups of these veggies per day which is extremely important to keep from getting constipated. The list of these includes:
lettuce, cucumbers, pepper, green onions, parsley, mushrooms, celery (thats all I can remember)

and then 1 cup of these other veggies:
cabage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, eggplant, pumpkin, kale, asparagus, summer squash and again the list is longer I am just listing what I remember

Olive oil, veggie oils, butter and mayo are allowed as well as vinegar

The next phase OWL is basically the same thing accept that you start increasing your carbs slowly based on a ladder that Dr. Atkins created. In induction you were at less than 20 grams of carbs and you can keep track of it thru fitday. So the first week you increase 5 grams by adding a new food from the ladder and then you monitor your weight - if your still losing then you continue to keep that food in your diet. Then the next week you add 5 more grams which is another new food and again you do the same thing until you reach point where your no longer losing. They have a name for it like Critical Carb Point or somthing like that. So then you know how many carbs you can eat and still lose weight.

Of course, I don't know much about the last phase since I never made it there but basically its staying at the carb level that keeps your weight the same...

Hope this helps.. Smile

Well, Dr. Atkins recommends the use of Splenda. He says that aspartame hinders weight loss in some people so you should stay away from it. I don't know about the other stuff you mentioned but like I said Dr. Atkins only recommends using Splenda but there is a limit of how much you use a day and I can't remember right off the top of my head as I can not find splenda where I am so I wasn't using any substitutes . I would drink my tea with nothing in it.

Hope this helps. Smile

I do nothing but low carb. Alot of people think you can eat all of the meat that you want which isn't true. I mainly eat grilled meats. I eat lots of vegetables, some fruit, and Low carb candy's since I love sweets! Most of it is really good. Even when I am not dieting I still could never imagine eating a hamburger or a hotdog with the bun! Lol. The most weight my mom has lost on low carb has been 50 lbs and then she just tried to maintain her weight. I just started my diet back not to long ago after about a month and with exercise I lost 5lbs in the first week. I am not over weight so for someone who is I imagine could lose more. What I like to do is when I feel like I am not losing much anymore I go off my diet majorly for about 3 days and when I go back on it the first week I lose 5-6 lbs.

When people say you gain your weight back very quickly when you have stopped dieting on this diet WELL that is EVERY diet. It doesn't matter what you are on if you start eating like you did before you are going to gain it back. That's just common sense.

Anyway, I love this diet. It's easy and works best for me. It's just a lifestyle for me now. It has been for about 7 years! Slight exercise and low carb is what made me lose all of my puberty chub!

I have done this program before and YES I was succesful HOWEVER, the problem comes when you decide to add carbs back, even in slow amounts. I lost 20lbs doing this program. It is vErY RIGID/ You can not cheat on this diet, so you must be committed. If you are a very well disciplined person and plan to remain on it for pretty much the rest of your life, then go for it. BUT LET ME WARN YOU!!!! I come from a family where weight is not an issue and no one is really overweight. Dropping a couple of pounds for me used to be very easy. Sometimes my weight would go down without my trying, mostly because I may have eaten less than what I had previously the week before. When I gained my first round of weight, it was due to an injury and I was pretty sedentary. Thats when I did atkins and lost 20lbs, but i was not able to STAY ON IT FOREVER, so the weight came back with an additional 10lbs. The next time I tried to lose weight it was SO DIFFICULT that I GAVE UP!!!! So, trying this diet could RUIN your body chemistry and i DO NOT RECOMMEND IT! FOr what I am going through now, it simply not worth it!

I did a modified vegetarian version of the Atkins diet and lost 8 lbs (from 138-130, I'm a 5'4" woman) and 2 inches of my waist in a month (29"-27"). Instead of meat I ate meat substitutes (about 2g net carbs per serving), and only lowered my carb intake to 30g/day and 1,800 cals at induction (before starting the diet I would gain weight on 1,300 cals because I was literally eating about 300+ grams of carbs a day).
After only a month of carb restriction, I have kept the weight and inches off for 5 months (and counting) and now eat much fewer carbs than I once did because I broke my carb addiction. I am now able to maintain at 150g carbs a day, so I don't have to give up my fave food of dramatically change my lifestyle. Every body is different, but this worked for me.
