Hello all!
I'm a 30 y/o male, 5'10" tall. I started on the weight loss track about 2 months ago. I've went from 275lb to 255lb in that time. Yay! Go Me!

I've always been a big boy. Never really got much exercise. I'm just a lazy blob... Never eat healthy. Pizza and beer has been my staple diet for years. when I turned 30 I said 'OK, that's Enough; time to do something about it".

Already I notice a difference in the way I feel. More energy, I can breath easier, I just feel better all around.

Now on to my question. When I walk; after about 10 minutes I get a burning cramp in the left ankle. I have to stop for 5-10 minutes till the pain goes away. Get back at it, and 10 minutes later.... I've never had an injury to that ankle. I sprained my right ankle pretty bad a few years ago (the muscle is still kinda lose), and that one gives me no trouble at all.

I stretch for 5-10 minutes before walking. No amount of stretching seems to make a difference.

So is this a case of my body still adjusting to the exercise, or something else? Is there a special stretch/exercise I can do to alleviate this? Boxers or briefs?

Way to go Dionysus!
pain in the left ankle... I am not a doctor so I will do an non educated guess Smile Its possible to be just a normal pain due to a mechanical pressure on that ankle. In this case you need to warm better, in most cases the pain will go away in time. You can also use something to recover after your training, something like fastum gel. I got good results with fastum gel while I was doing pro sport, it really helps.

It the pain does not disappear please visit a doc. He will probably prescribe you something better, maybe take an xray and do some recuperation sessions.

Keep us posted!

Thanks Light!

After my sessions the pain lasts for about 10 minutes. There's no soreness afterwards.

I think it maybe my form that's messed up. It seems like when I pick that foot up the muscle tightens up for some reason. Like I'm lifting my toes.

I'm going to try an ankle brace tonight to see if that helps.

Hey D.

It could be something as simple as your shoes! You could try going to a specialty shop.. not the chain store at the MALL... ask for some advise (ask them to watch your gait) try to gain as much free knoweldge as you can.

Sometimes there are insoles you can buy that are heat moldable (not the crappy drug store kind ) these are "super feet" or others . I would try these before a podiatrist. $$$$ OF course don't forget your careful stretching routine.

Also I have another suggestion. go to the library and check out chi walking by denny dreyer. I havn't actually read this one BUT I read and own the chi running... and the principals are the same... A sort of mind body work out that is terrifically consuming and satisfying. ( I learn more about my self each day ) If you are serious and dig down you can do IT ! I want to hear MORE !

Good tips from skilongskatefast!
Some running shoes may help. I like the Asics softgel and Mizuno.

I've heard good things about chi walking but never read it.

thanks folks!

I know some Tai Chi already (in college it was that or bowling...). Been thinking about adding wrist and ankle wieghts to it.

Gait... I had to google that one, lol. I am slew footed (feet point out) *light bulb above head*. Why didn't I think of that?! That's probably it! Looks like it's time for new shoes.

sometimes my ignorance amazes me... Confused

I got a new pair of Asics Gel-Cumulus today. When trying them on in the store and walking around for about 10 minutes they were VERY comfortable. I hope this does it cause I really don't want to see a dr... they want too much money...

Ty for the advice guys!

BE careful, you may have a stress fracture in your foot/leg. If it does not go away I would go to a doctoer for an xray.

Well, the ankle pain has went away. YAY!

but... calf pain has replaced it....

from the research I've done it sounds like anterolateral shin-splints. It runs vertically up the outside of my left calf (same leg Rolling Eyes ). So I'm going to cut my workout in half for about a week, and then throw it to it again to see what happens.

well, a lil over a week later...

I've had no leg pain since I cut the work out in half. I'm going to slowly work back up to 'full force'.

Thanks again guy!

Hey - I'm glad it worked for you. I'm just jumping in on the thread here, but I wanted to say thanks for posting. I was having a "discussion" (grin) about how important good form for any kind of exercise. Now I can tell my sister shoes and form cured ankle pain for walking!
