is 1000 calories a day bad for you? |

hello, i just started a diet/exercise program about 2 weeks ago and i'm hoping to stick with it till the end.
I wake up, eat a bowl of bran flakes w/1% milk, then about 3ish hours later i start exercising. I start with an hour of cycling(12mph with strong resistance), rest 5 minutes, then start lifting 2 20lb dumbells about 20-25 sets in a couple different positions, rest 5 minutes, then i just hit the punching bag for about 20 minutes. it probably takes me about 100-110 minutes to finish everything and it feels effin great when i'm done. so now for lunch i have another bowl of bran flakes sometimes raisin bran and 3 boiled egg whites, then for dinner i either stick a small piece of skinless chicken breast or 2 chopped up boiled egg whites between two pieces of toasted wheat bread. all together it usually adds up to about 1000 calories a day since i only drink water now. i only exercise mon-fri, but the diet stays the same all week. my mom says it's too little what i'm eating but i never feel hungry, maybe she just says that because it's really little compared to what i used to eat. also i should add that i'm 20 and i weigh about 350 lbs....yes i know.
so umm yeah the question... is it okay for me to keep doing this long term or is my mom right and i should eat a *little* more.
my goal is to keep doing this for a year at least, i know it will be really hard but it's been easy so far . |

The good news is that you are exercising. That is important. But at 1,000 calories, you may be going to low and that could stunt your metabolism, causing it to slow down. At least you are not hungry, so that is good. But when you go too low on your calorie intake, even at 1,000 calories, you will find it hard to lose weight, or worse yet you will gain it all back and then some, when you go back onto a normal diet.
If you insist on stayin on such a low caloric diet, I would suggest you shoick your body at least once per week, perhaps twice, by jumping your calories up to 2,000 or 2,500. But make them healthy calories, broken down over 6 meals throughout the day.
By doing this, it will trick your brain and it wont think you're starving, and your metabolism should be OK.
Also, I assume you meant 25 reps on the dumbells and not 25 sets, right? Otherwise you are way over training. 2 or 3 sets per exercise should be fine. I like keeping reps in the 8 to 12 rep range and I usually take it to failure (this means not being able to lift the weight one more rep without compromising your form.

thanks for the reply.
i think i will change my diet to 2000 calories once or twice a week and see how that goes. i started this routine almost 3 weeks ago, i was at least 360lbs and now i'm at 344lbs so it's working out so far. yeah i meant about 20-25 sets, but as of a few days ago i have cut it down to about 10 sets of 20 reps cause i don't want to over work myself. i also started eating 6 small meals a day instead of the 3 but still keeping it at 1000 c's.
also, any one reading this.. is eating "carb-y" food 4 times a day bad for losing weight? i hear all the time about people staying away from carbs to lose weight but i just don't know what else i could eat. cereal and egg white wheat bread sandwiches are pretty much the only things i eat beside of the usual skinless chicken breast piece i have for dinner. i'd like to eat salads but i really don't like the taste of green leafy vegetables. so there really isn't anything else i find to eat other than cereals, eggs, fruit, and chicken.

I definitely think 1000 calories is way too low, moving closer to the classic 2000 calorie diet will be much more sustainable and better for your overall health and energy levels. Maybe shoot for 1600-1800 calories, or have you tried this already?
Some other options for food are ...
Nuts - High in protein and healthy fats.
Beans - Still a lot of carbs but you get a lot of protein and fibre along with it
Avoiding carbs may help for some people but I think it's very important to eat foods with high nutrient desnity this will this will definitely help with your weight loss effort. |

i'm eating around 1100 a day now, but i cheat once a week...it's hard not to. i don't go crazy like before though, when i cheat i just make sure it's under 2,000ish calories for the whole day. i get that perhaps 1000ish calories a day is too little but i'd just like to get out the 'super obese' range as fast as possible, so ideally i would like to up the cal. intake by 100 more every 4 weeks . thanks for the food tips johnson, i really don't know anything about good fats bad fats or good and bad carbs and stuff...losing weight is complicated :/....
soo now i'm down to 325, that's about 40 less than when i started almost 2 months ago so that's good....only 160lbs more to go ha...i only wish i had started this much sooner. |

Loosing weight the healthy way has many variables according to how your body reacts to input. Here is one example, the starvation mode:
Every body needs specific nutrients in order to operate and function efficiently as it is designed to do. In essence a person can overeat while at the same time starving their body. If you want to lose fat quickly:
- Get on a diet like Fat Loss for Idiots. This uses calorie cycling to reduce the body's propensity to store fat. It is very effective.
- Drink a ton of water as this assists the metabolism in doing its job.
- Do light to moderate cardio exercise. You won't need a lot and it doesn't have to be hard; just enough to elevate your heart rate for 30-40 minutes 2-3 times a week. Just taking a brisk walk a couple times a week may do it for you.
The key point here is that it's perfectly possible to lose weight rapidly in a healthy way, but it's a much different process from ordinary maintenance dieting. Long-term, building a healthy body is about eating a balanced diet. Short-term fat loss is different.
Either way, though, 1,000 calories is not the right solution; your body will go into starvation mode and store as much fat as it can. You might still lose weight but it's unclear whether the body is burning fat, muscle, or who knows what, and I'm not sure you'll be able to sustain those results.

| 1k cal a day may not be enough food. I would do 1,500 cal. then 1,800 and then 1,300. Spike the cal intake and burn more fat |
