phen and alcohol..... |
|
|
| I am taking phen after a 10+ year hiatus from fen-phen. I know I drank alcohol with it then, I was a crazy college girl. But now I am a little leary. Doc who prescribed said don't drink point blank twice. I am also taking wellbutrin xl 300mg and b12 shots...all from the same clinic. Any experience? I am a moderate drinker, maybe 3-4 times a month. I assume I'll just skip that day or break a 37.5 in half? Thanks!! |

Hey, Patsy,
To be on the safe side, I would call a pharmacy and just ask to speak to a pharmacist. Tell him/her what you (or a friend, ahem) are taking, and ask if alcohol in moderation is okay.
I would think it's not a great idea b/c phen is a stimulant, and alcohol is a depressant. At best, you're wasting the effects of the phentermine. It's also gotta be tough on your liver.
Wellbutrin is also a stimulant of sorts, not that it causes a high or anything. I've been on phen & wellbutrin before (and had a few drinks now and then), and was fine. However, everyone is different in their reactions, and I'm a big believer in "Do as I say, not as I do". LOL.
I know one doctor prescribed the meds to you, but a pharmacist is more knowledgeable when it comes to interactions. All three are CNS agents, so I'd just ask.
BTW - how did fen/phen work for you back in the day? |

| I do drink on it with no problems. They also say not to drink alcohol with antibiotics. I happen to enjoy a glass of wine while I am preparing dinner or sitting outside with friends. I don't binge drink, so I think it is totally fine. I have never had any reaction or adverse effects. |

| I am glad that this topic was brought up because I am sure it is a common question/issue. Has anyone had any adverse reactions/side effects/ health problems as a result of using phen and alcohol? |

| "Back in the day" it worked great! Cash only clinic, charged me $70 a month, and I thought that was steep. I was a lean, mean co-ed and lived it up big time. I did have heart palpatations that were pretty scary every once in a while.....just sat down and waited it out. I had a clean car, dorm room, closet and was the most efficient waitress you've ever seen. Those were the days! |

Punchie,
If you look carefully you will see that she used "phen fen" which was the so effective (I never tried it but I know some who have and the weight just peeled off) combination of a stimulant and a depressant. It was later found that a few who used the combo developed problems with leaky heart valves and it was banned. The phen portion is still generally considered to be safe. |

| Took my first this morn, too soon to tell. I know the b12 shot will be a great boost though. |

Hi patsyplease,
Your doc also may have been referring to the Wellbutrin when he/she told you to not drink. I've been off and on anti-depressants for a few years now and I've always been told to not mix alcohol with them. Just a thought |

| Baglady I have a question for you....Is the Welbutrin like other anti-depressants where you have to stair step off of them? I inquired to said doctor. He said no, no problem that they can be stopped at any time. Sounded fishy to me, but the whole office dynamic was questionable. Not complaing or picky, just sayin'. |

I've actually never taken Wellbutrin so I can't say for sure. But not everyone will experience withdrawal symptoms. I googled it and read different things, but nothing definitive either way.
I suggest you go to a pharmacy nearby and just ask a pharmacist or pharmacist tech there to see what they think. Ask for their opinion, that's what they are there for. Good luck! |

| I think that the meds actually make me want to drink more. I get all my things done earlier and before I know it, it feels like cocktail hour when it is like two o'clock. Anyone else feel this way. I know you are not supposed to drink but I figure a few drinks once in awhile..... welll, its wrong, i know sue me. |
