It's very similar in function to phentermine, which makes sense because they are both sympathomimetic amines. In other words, it's a stimulant of the amphetamine class; however, it's on the weaker end and is a schedule IV controlled substance (in the US), just like phentermine is. The brand name is Tenuate, but you can also find it called "amfepramone", especially in and from Mexico.
There are two varieties: immediate release, which comes in 25mg tablets which are taken up to 3 times per day before meals, and the 75 mg extended-release tablets which are taken once per day. Most people who have tried it, find that it is weaker than phen. I think it tends to affect the dopamine receptor in the brain, which is our "pleasure center", while phentermine affects serotonin levels, which in turn promotes the feeling of satiety. And, then we don't eat.
You might have heard of Zyban or Wellbutrin - they are related to diethylpropion and are used to help people quit smoking. They work exactly because they take the pleasure out of smoking by blocking dopamine.
I know everyone is looking for alternatives to phentermine. If you don't have any medical conditions that would contraindicate taking a stimulant, than ephedra is a decent substitute for phentermine.
Just my $.02 - take it with a grain of salt. |
