Making Choices: Surgery or Therapy?

Let's say you have osteoarthritis - probably the most common disorder of locomotors system. It is often treated with a surgical procedure to clean out debris in the joint, using a miniature scope inserted directly into the knee. But more and more researches point out fact that the surgery works, but no better than other treatments. Dr. Kalousek is a rheumatologist from Spa-resorts.cz points out - surgery doesn't stop the arthritic process.
Interestingly American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) encourages patients to think about physical therapy as an alternative non-surgical option for osteoarthritis treatment.
Doctor Kalousek confidences that beside health SPA treatments everyone can protect joints from osteoarthritis or slow its progression simply by following suggestions:
-Lose weight. Remember that every pound lost reduces the load exerted on the knee for each step by four pound.
-Be active. Exercise strengthens the muscles around joints, which can prevent cartilage from wearing down.
-Stay straight. Good posture protects the neck, back, hip and knee joints.
-Don't stay immobile when sitting. Changing positions can reduce joint and muscle stiffness.
-Lift carefully. Use your strongest & biggest joints and muscles when carrying & lifting to avoid straining smaller joints.
-Break it up. Rest between periods of heavy activity to prevent repetitive stress on joints that can accelerate wear and tear.
In other words non-surgical therapy is a good option of surgical operation for many patients!

Hi Horvples,
Please always try to therapy and not surgery! I have seen many joint replacements and other evasive procedures that have not really helped.
Many patients have complained about this and will not go back to have more done. Try diets that are centered around your condition along with exercise that is water based (the weightlessness helps relieve any pressure). Keep up a positive mindset and enjoy life!

I fully agree that therapy should always be the first consideration. I have specialized in rehabilitative exercise for over 20 years and have seen tremendous results without surgery for my clients. The surgery for chondromalacia of the knee (osteoarthritis of the knee cap) was deemed no better than voodoo.
Proper strengthening and range of motion exercises along with supplements like omega 3 and turmeric, or prolo-therapy are far more effective.

Because I'm scared of surgery, I also recommend therapy first, lol. This is also what I recommend for weight loss (counseling/guidance before gastric bypass).
My wife had gastric bypass surgery, yes she lost a lot of weight but I she has had some behavioal side efffects like depression that has lasted years afterward. My best advice is therpy.
Scarry facts - 60% of Americans are obesse, fatigue is the #1 complaint that adults have when they see their doctor and most distrubing heart disease is the #3 killer of teens in the US.
I have lost 15 lbs and 2 inches off my waist in 2 weeks, my energy is through the roof and my skin is comming back alive again. The best thing is that I did this totally naturally with no side effects, medican, doctors visits or surgery.
